IR, besides demonic possession, untreated mental illnesses and the anti-social personality disorder (also known as psychopathic personality disorder) can cause horrific events like this.
I know--but I wonder how much of that sort of pathology is of demonic origin. Especially Anti-social personality disorder!
It's hard to tell--but I do think that demonic influences can use or exacerbate mental illness.
Partly, I say this because of how many people in the Occult/Magickal communities I saw go nuts as their practices intensified.

Read Father Amorth's An Exorcist Tells His Story for a lot of insights. He writes it in a very instructive manner, so you won't find yourself terrified by it all. But its very informative and telling about the situation at hand...
It's like no one is safe. No one is exempt from the horror. People don't think twice anymore about killing babies, children, old folks. God help us.
I have no doubt that demonic influence can use or exacerbate mental illnesses. However, we must be careful not to overplay the demonic angle. Lunacy and demonic possession are recognized as separate disorders in the Bible and in the holy traditions handed down to us.
You're correct about occult practices being a cause of mental disorders. I have a book by a yogi guru named Pre, and one of the chapters in his book warns about mental and physical illnesses that Western medical science has no treatment or cure for. Wowsers!
My daughter has a mental condition which is called Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD). Without going into a long dissertation on the subject ... she never developed a conscience like other children. Anyway, she could easily have been one of those people who commits mass murder and other horrific things.
I am sure that the Evil one has no problems helping to push these people into these situations, but we still need to choose to leap off the cliff.
