And I have to get to work in the garden, clean the porch, finish up my laundry and clean my boars den of a room. Then this evening we will plant out the last of the garden. So It's a light blogging day.
I'll just mention a few things in passing, and put up a couple of links to stories that are more interesting.
In passing, I'm appalled that students were disciplined for wearing American Flag apparel on Cinco de Mayo. Just because you're an Anglo doesn't mean that you forfeit your right to free speech in California and the southwest. Despite the rioting and civil disorder (that's not reported well in the MSM).
In passing, I am amazed that a professional teacher, the one with the best credentials in the system i which she was employed, was bullied and ridiculed in front of her students for having the termity of passing out a failing grade. And, I'm gratified that she's suing. Even if she looses, it brings it out in the open.
In passing, I'm not worried that President Obama will appoint a progressive, pro-abortion justice to the supreme court, after all, this person will be replacing JP Stevens, who was a progressive abortion supported. No change. Yes, it's no improvement, but it's also no detriment either. It's the status quo. At least it's not getting worse.
Things to go read:
Father Jonathan Morris: Father Morris is leaving the Legionnaires of Christ for incardination into Diocesan ministry. Abp. Dolan has invited him to incardinate into the Archdiocese of New York. He has a very brief comment up on Facebook at www.facebook.com/pages/Father-Jonathan-Morris/138553706142?ref=ts . I don't know exactly what to make of his statement and he's not amplifying.
Andrew Brietbart: Has some succinct remarks about the media and the left up. You could do worse than to go read them. He is saying--well I might add--that I've been thinking and what I've not been able to clearly articulate. www.lifesitenews.com/idn/2010/may/10055702.html . That's a summary. but has a link to the whole interview. Good reading.
AFP does some low Level Catholic Bashing, by telling one side of the story: In a story emphasizing how out of touch the Hierarchy is with "Catholic" morality vis a vis the pill. Absolutely does not address the increasing number of couples who do not use the pill, but use Natural Family Planning (which, BTW, has an effectiveness rate equal to the condom) and the interestingly growing number of women using NFP to avoid the ecological effects of hormone contamination of surface and ground water and the carcinogenic effects of the pill. Nor does it address the modern methods of NFP, referring to "Vatican Roulette". And the old jokes about the same. Go read it, and see some more evidence of Media Anti Catholicism. www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/AleqM5ifmP5u_HA4LV3sJVcQymUIJAvn4A .
No Free Speech for Pro Life People: Blood Money is a documentary movie about the abortion industry and it's practices. It was set to premier at the Spectrum Theater in Albany, NY. The first showing was sold out in advance. Then pro abortion "activists" threatened to protest and to disrupt the showings. I emphasized disrupt because that involves entering the theater to make it impossible to show the film. Read the whole thing here: http://www.newsrealblog.com/2010/05/06/%22pro-aborts%22-shut-down-abortion-industry-expose/ .
Following the trail of Death, which means following the money: Vicki Evans is the Respect Life Coordinator for the Archdiocese of San Francisco. She is a CPA as well. In the course of earning her Licentiate in Bio-Ethics from the Regina Apostolorum Pontifical University in Rome, she produced a document that follows the money trail of the death industry. You can read about her study at
www.lifesitenews.com/Idn/2010/may/10050711.html. The document itself is available on google docs through the above link, if you have google account (like being on blogger). Ms. Evans used her accounting degree to track exactly how enmeshed into the economic system abortion is, through the sale of fetal tissue and abortion by products. Chilling stuff.
Oh--before I go, I just want to say this: Fox News, I don't want to see Helena Christensen naked. And I find it to be more than a little hypocritical of you to put up fluff piece stories about how much sex is in advertising and if it's gone to far to justify your putting up picture of naked models. And I was appalled yesterday when you had the story about Miley Cyrus' new video being too sexy for a 17 year old, and an opportunity to link to it. You can't just be mouthing platitudes about these things and boosting your readership by linking the very thing you claim to be criticizing. That's one of the reasons I seldom follow your stories, or use your site for anything. I can find titillation and porn on my own, and I especially don't want your meaningless "journalism" to become a near occasion of sin for me while I try to read up on the news.
You Suk, you're part of the problem, and I am no longer a reader.
TRIUMPHALIST--YOU GOT A PROBLEM WITH THAT?
TRIUMPHALIST--YOU GOT A PROBLEM WITH THAT? I believe that the Catholic Church was founded by Christ, on his Apostles, especially Peter, the first Pope. I believe in the teachings of the Ecumenical councils, I revere the Fathers of the Church, and I am an unapologetic Ultramontane Catholic. If you don't like it, too bad.

Fast Mover
Bishop Bambara was very recently Ordained to the Episcopate. He is the new Bishop of Scranton. On the 7th of May, 10 days after being ordained, he began asking the Jesuit run University of Scranton, "What the heck are you doing?"
He has formally expressed his concern, and mentioned his duty as the Ordinary to ensure that a Catholic Institution adheres to and promotes Catholic Teaching.
I have noticed that under His Holiness, Benedict XVI, more bishops are exhibiting the Organs Required By Canon Law.
Good deal.

Catholicism and Environmentalism
Well, it was an interesting thing I read in the Leo. It was about living more sustainably, being more environmentally responsible. It was the usual eco-idealist thing, but with one difference: at the end of the article it has simple suggestions that anyone could implement without a great deal of disruption to help lessen their environmental imprint.
We do have responsibility to take care of the Earth. That's common sense, and the Vatican has affirmed this. Of course, there is a lot of discussion--OK, raging, imprecation laded arguing and fighting--about how to do it.
Well, one of the ideas set forth for a low impact way to help the environment was simply to have one meatless dinner a week. I know that doesn't sound like much, but if enough households did that it would reduce environmental loading significantly; from reducing deforestation in South America to produce grazing land, to reduced water usage (The amount of water used to produce meat commercially is astonishing! Hundreds of times the amount the animal actually drinks!), to lessened pressure on grain supplies and reduced mono crop agriculture. I've known of vegetarians who don't eat meat, not because they think it's wrong, but because they feel that commercial meat production is environmentally unsustainable at it's current scale. Interestingly enough, about half of them eat game. And if one meatless meal a week is a good thing, how about three!
And if one were to have all three of these meatless meals on one day, say Friday, well, gee--one could follow the traditional implementation the precept that Fridays be kept as a day of special penance. In fact, one could witness the Catholic Faith at lunch at work, while at the same time working to keep up a lifestyle in keeping with Catholic Teaching on the environment, as well as other aspects of Catholic Social Teaching (Like not injuring others through over consumption!). Hmmmm--we could point this out to our fellow parishioners, if we happen to live in a parish that is not exactly noted for adherence to traditional forms, and, brick by brick, help with the Reform of the Renewal. After all, praxis affects faith, and God's Grace is like water: give it the tiniest crack or pore, and over time it will expand that into a great torrent, given any chance at all.
Just a thought.

Catholic Women
Let me say right off the bat that I am unsure if this opinion is consistent with Catholic Teaching. I am not even sure if it's derived from Catholic Teaching by any sort of defensible means. This opinion is based solely on my experience and observations--it's anecdotal in origin, I guess you could say.
Catholic men need Catholic women. Without them, we fail miserably. We most especially need the love and prayers of Catholic women.
It doesn't matter whether the man is a married or single, a deacon, a priest or a bishop. He could be a sinner, a saint, a soldier. Or he could be a friar, a monk, a garbage man, a surgeon. but he will not thrive without the prayers of Catholic women.
I actually don't know a deacon or priest who doesn't benefit from the prayers of women. Starting most probably with their mothers. But from their friends, their parishioners from people they don't know and will never meet.
Without the prayers of Catholic women, I would have succumbed to drug addiction and hopelessness.
Catholic men need Catholic women, because they inspire in us the desire to be good Catholics. They show us examples of a living faith that's joyous and kind, yet firm and filled with "grit and grace".
I can't imagine persevering in faith, without the support of my Catholic sisters in faith. And I will go so far as to say that any man who thinks he can is fooling himself.
And, I think this state of affairs is part of God's plan, an effect of the principle of complementarity.
So to all my Catholic sisters, Thanks. Thank you so much for helping me to realize the Love of God and to be receptive to his Grace.

Yeah, just get it over with early.
Whoopi Goldberg, (who holds that plying a 13 year old girl with wine, drugging her, making porno pics of her then sodomizing her isn't "rape rape") has become emotional on camera about requiring fetal ultrasounds before abortion, because it's a very effective means of reducing the number of women who choose to have an abortion. And after all, if they don't have abortions, parents will just kill their kids.
No kidding--she says that the parents will kill their kids after they're born, so they should abort them.
Jeesshhhh!

Off Shore Drilling
Political pundits and cartoonists both characterized President Obama's opening of more areas for offshore oil drilling as a bone to conservatives. Some say it was to keep them from using energy policy as a bat in the upcoming election, and the 2012 election, others to demonstrate a willingness to work with conservatives.
Some categorized this decision to drill as a simple recognition of reality: we are far too dependant on foreign oil for a healthy economy, our for our national security.
While not having the basis for discarding these hypothesis, I will point to another one, if I may. President Obama is a Chicago Machine Politician. That may not seem to make sense to you as a factor in this matter, unless you realize, as Erica Lovely reported in Politico, that Barack Hussein Obama has received more money from British Petroleum than any one else in federal office! Oh--he also received lots of dollars from BP-PAC.
You might have heard of British Petroleum, the company who owns all that oil that's bearing down on the US gulf coast. (The same part of the Gulf Coast, I will point out, that over 70% off all species in the Gulf and Atlantic fisheries use for reproduction!)
So, while courting environmentalists, and promising openness and change in Washington, it looks awfully like another backroom done deal, Chicago Style. I didn't expect to like most of his policies or actions, but I had hoped for something better than this.

Pell Gets It!
George Cardinal Pell has been appointed Prefect of the Congregation for Bishops.
As Cardinal Pell has been one of the forces behind the Reform of the Renewal, this is good news for Catholics, and bad news for Modernists and Relativists--especially those in purple.
I think I owe his holiness a beer for this one. (Every time Pope Benedict XVI does something good that gives me hope and I hear of it, I think I should buy him a beer. The Total is now 367 beers.) But I'm told he prefers wine.

Par for the Course
An EU Commissioner named Michael Barnier has called for the further regulation of Credit Rating Organizations. this comes in the wake of the downgrading of Greece's credit rating to "junk" status, and the lesser downgrading of Portugal and Spain's ratings.
Barnier even proposes setting up separate systems for rating the credit of nations.
I'm a big believer in transparency in government, and this is transparent! It's transparent that the idea is that if the extent of the problem had not become so public, then the market confidence would not have been shaken and the Euro would not have declined against other currencies.
The result of that, of course, would have been an inadequate response by the financial sector, followed by a general collapse when Greece collapsed under the weight of it's debt.
But at least the population would be out of the picture in the decision making process. In other words, the common man needs to stay out of the business of their betters while they are managing his future and life.
It reminds me of the comments of the Euro functionaries when the UK proved resistant to EU moves to limit the rights of parents: "They are not yet ready to accept government involvement in family life". Not, you will note, that further governmental involvement in family life might be wrong, but that the people of the UK "...are not yet ready...". As if not being prepared to accept this degree of governance is a sign of cultural and political immaturity that they will out grow.
That is the mind set of European Tranzies, and these people like Obama and the Pelosi edition of the Democratic Party. And Obama, and the Pelosi edition of the Democratic Party likes them.
I think this is the unarticulated reason why so many Americans are dissatisfied with Congress. We have, as a population responded to President Obama's charisma, but it's difficult for an institution to have charisma, and though unarticulated, the american people see the arrogance and contempt behind the expansion of powers and the intrusion of government into their personal and professional lives.
We established a political tradition of citizenship, we are citizens, not subjects, and we instinctively recoil from, resent and reject government moves that smack of subjugation.

I NEED READERS!
Tell people to read my blog! I would like to increase my readership to what it was with Redneck Catholic, or something close, at least!
The Laudable, the Culpable and the Contumacious
Well, everyone here who has been following the new translation of the Roman Missal is by now aware that there is a sign up sheet on the internet trying to delay or derail the implementation of the translation, which has recieved the recognitio from Rome. Lots of folks have signed it, including most or all of the sisters at one convent/motherhouse in Louisville.
Oh well.
But one parish in the Archidiocese, St. Agnes, (located at 1927 Newburg Road, in Louisville) has gone a bit further. The Parish Council has issued a letter to many parishes in the Archdiocese seeking support for a program of delay, or partial implementations and "experimentation" to implement the new translation.
Well, the Chancery has issued a letter to all Pastors and Pastoral Administrators. It politely says "Don't even Try". It also points out that there is an 18 month program of catechesis in the works that will address the changes, the reason for the changes, and will address as well the Liturgy in general, and why it is done a given way. It also points out that there is one Missal Translation for all 11 English speaking nations, and that it is in support of the universal nature of the Church's prayer that we all need to use and pray the same translation.
One wonders, sometimes, if those who are so assiduously opposing the new, more accurate translation know about the inaccuracies, the weakening of Eucharistic and Sacramental Theology or the neo- and semi- Pelagianism of some of the translations, or are unconcerned with them.
It is my opinion, and I emphasize opinion, that yes they are. And they are very concerned with them. Moreover, they are very, very aware of Lex Credendi, Lex Orandi. That's the whole point. With the new translation, the weekly, nearly subliminal, reinforcement of these ideas will end. And, with the fuller meaning of our Liturgy revealed, their theology will be exposed as inadequate, or erroneous. And they don't want that.
This whole thing surfacing now is interesting. Right now, the Archdiocese is in the opening phase of a campaign, not just to raise capital, but to get the faithful to pray for guidance about the will of God for themselves, as individuals. And the attitude of many of the dissidents is really simple: they are telling God what they want to do. In fact, by setting aside, as much as possible, Catholic Teaching and Tradition (yes, that's a deliberate big "T" Tradition), and blocking their communication in the Liturgy, they are either saying to the Lord, that the Holy Spirit has been wrong for millenia, or that he has been ineffective in explicating his will, or--and this is what I think is most probable--they actually believe that the Faithful can, using the "power of the Keys" dictate what is true. That we can tell the Holy Spirit--who has spoken through the Prophets, through Scripture and Tradition--what he should be doing, what we really need. (It's depressing to me that so many dissenting congregations and orders of Sisters in in their mission statements say they are called to "Prophetic Witness", that they are prophets. )

Some Quick Stuff
Arrested: Dale McAlpine, 42, is a Baptist Preacher. he was arrested for being overheard by a Gay Police Community Support Officer (is that the thought police?) overheard him listing several biblical sins to someone, including drunkenness, blasphemy, and same sex relationships.
Mr McAlpine was charged under The Public Order Act, designed to curb football hooligans. Christians have been expressing fears for some time that this act is being used to silence preachers.
(This was reported in the Telegraph.)
Congress tries to steal freedom again: Henry Waxman (D-CA) has inserted language into the Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act to allow the Federal Trade Commission [HR4173] (WTF??? not the FDA? ) to write regulations with the force of law about nutritional supplement companies. The FTC has been trying to gain regulatory powers over these companies for some time. (Logic suggests that the people to be regulating this is the FDA!) So, by placing a bit of verbage into a popular law, and hoping the people don't notice, he wishes to give a bunch of desk sitting pencil pushers more power over a portion of the economy that they don't need, don't deserve and have already been told to back off from repeatedly.
I the same bill, provisions exist to give the FTC powers over the Internet (an area that is privatly owned, so the FCC has failed to gain control of it, and which is already coverred by existing fraud laws, etc.) This efforst is also sponsored by Dems.
If we need this "reform" law so badly, why are they trying to clutter it up with things that have nothing to do with the Wall Street meltdown? Could it be just another power grab by the party whose leader said "We have to get beyond Constitutional controls" on government power?
I'm so sick of Left Wing Violence Against Conservatives: In San Francisco, a group demonstrating in support of Arizona's Immigration Law (not really an immigration law, not really new---it simply requires cops to do what they are supposed to do in the first place, and doesn't authorize random stops and requests for papers!) were followed, punched, kicked, beaten and insulted. Arrests were made, and those arrested will be charge with assault and robbery.
Mean while in the Downtown Santa Cruz the AP is reporting that an unsanctioned anti-Arizona march , (with out permits) turned in to a spasm of vandalism, marchers in the downtown area began to smash windows ans spray paint businesses. Great way to win my support.

WOW----Talk about not facing reality!
It has come to light that several Bishops of the Church of England have been in contact with the Vatican in reference to the document "Communities of Anglicans" (I can't spell the Latin!). apparently they are preparing to resign from the Cof E, and cross the Tiber in response to the Direction the C of E is taking.
Now the lack of groundedness in respect to the shared aspects of the pluriform truths of the Anglican branch of the Catholic Faith as Received and Protected by the Crown is demonstrated by this quote "This will seriously embarrass the Pope. It's a plot within the Vatican..they are desperate...Many will see this as proof the Catholic Church is...poaching from the church of England... ." That's form " A leading Anglican cleric", and it's bullshit.
First, evangelization, the correction of heresy, and the healing of any part of schism isn't poaching--it's the duty of the Church! Second, the C of Ewas founded in robbery, with most of the church's patrimony being transferred into private hands, and removed for the exercises of charity. Not to mention making many, many martyrs of Catholics. (The count is very lopsided, there, and Foxe's Book of Martyrs has been pretty much discredited as an item of propaganda!) Third, the document was simply a response to about half a million Anglicans who were requesting a way to unite with Rome! Fourth, I wouldn't begin to say that it was an embarrassment for the Pope.
It is however, an embarrassment for the C of E, that it's direction has become so vague, and so secularized, (not to mention the politicization of the C of E from it's inception) that some of it's Bishops would rather swim the Tiber than to remain in the Anglican communion. The C of E is an Eratsian Church, and with the secularization of the UK, and the un-christianization of it's government, it has followed suit, instead of preserving Christianity in the UK.
This is not an embarrassment for Rome, rather, the requests and inquiry from the Anglicans is a Validation. Only someone who is profoundly confused in his theology, or committed to some sort of gentleman's agreement instead of the Gospel and the lord could see it in any other way.

And in Olde Blighty, the rights of Christians are trammeled.
Lord Carey, the former Anglican Archbishop of Canterbury, is saying that there will be civil unrest in the UK. And, he's saying that this unrest will take the form of the State persecuting Christians.
Said Lord Carey: "It is, of course, but a short step from the dismissal of a sincere Christian from employment to a religious bar to any employment by Christians." The remarks come in response to a court ruling that the state has no interest in, or responsibility to, protect the conscience rights of "religious believers".
This is dishonest: it is quite simply anti-christian bigotry. And the assertion that this protection would violate the "British constitution" (which is unwritten and can be changed at the whim of government, essentially) flies in the face of at least two well known precedent's: the establishment i the 18th century of Orthodox Jewish Courts to deal with questions within that community, and the recognition of Sharia Courts as having legitimacy in certain types of cases.
Lord Carey also spoke of the consistant downgrading of Christian Civil Rights in the UK, and pointed out the tendancy to equivelate "Christian" with "Bigot" was in itself bigotry.

No, I don't trust Muslims, and I wonder when they will turn violent next.
In the UK, a war memorial has been defaced by a Muslim, who wrote graffiti on it saying that Tosheef Shaw spray painted the memorial with the words "Islam will dominate the World", and "Kill Gordon Brown". Now Europeans, and some Americans are so cowed by the philosophy of political correctness that one can't really call some one out for this. So it was decided that this wasn't "religiously motivated". In fact the counselor for the perp (Mumatz Caudry) said there was not evidence that Mr. Shaw was an "extremist". (S0, calling for the murder of a head of state and proclaiming that Islam will dominate the world are not extreme things?) Of course, in the UK Christians can't even follow the dictates of their religion without the state sanctioning them.
Here in America, an event sponsored by Jewish students at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee was disrupted by the members of the Muslim Student Association, who began shouting and became violent. One Jewish student was injured and one Muslim arrested. The Jewish students had rented a climbing wall for their event, and the Muslim students climbed it and planted a Palestinian flag on the top.
The University is "investigating" to see if any "student conduct rules" were violated. If they have to investigate this much, I have to wonder if their student conduct rules are at all adequate. At this time, Jewish students are reporting that they feel threatened, and are seeking a meeting with the university to ensure that there is a safe environment on campus for future meetings and events. I don't blame them! (Remember the Muslim student who used his SUV to run over students on his campus, and said it was part of the Jihad?)

Abortion, Drug Abuse, and Mental Illness
The Toronto Sun is reporting that a study released by the University of Manitoba finds that about 50% of women who have had an abortion suffer mental illness and substance abuse.
Critics are saying that the study only shows a correlation, which as we all know doesn't prove causality. And, that's true, and it isn't contested by the study'ss authors. However, they suggest that doctors treating women who are complaining of or demonstrating mood disorder, substance abuse and anxiety symptoms be screened for a history of abortion.
The study found that 25% of all women with a history of abortion also had a history of substance abuse, compared with 7% of the female population at large.
Also interesting, to me at least, is that household income plays a role--women with a household income 75K or greater were more likely to have had an abortion than those with a household income level of 25K or less. So much fro the idea that abortion frees poor women. I think it more likely that it enables women of a higher economic bracket to avoid the consequences of sexual activity unwisely engaged in.

Hoosier Style Poached Venison
This is an old family recipe, thats been in my family since Saturday, when I realized I didn't have the ingredients on hand to make the dinner I had planned, and that the meat was already thawed.
So:
Take about 3 1/2 to 4 pound venison roast, and cube it as you would for stew ( be sure to cut a steak off the end of the roast to your desired thickness, to broil up for lunch. Especially if you have lemon juice and "Montreal steak" type seasoning!) Set it aside and slice up 4 stalks of celery, thin. Put the celery in you crock pot. Put two table spoons bacon drippings into your favorite saute skillet, and bring to temp. While it's heating, slice the white potion of a a bunch of scallions thin, and put 1/2 bulb of garlic through your press, (Or dice, or used the jarred diced garlic you have in the fridge) put these in the skillet with the bacon drippings and saute on a high temp until they turn translucent, when that happens, add the meat and brown quickly, then transfer the whole thing into the crock pot. Add 4 bell peppers (if you can mix up the colors it looks nicer) which have been chopped into about 1/2" squares. Add a 12 oz can red kidney beans. Add a generous dusting of fresh cracked black pepper, 2 Tbs winter savory, 1 Tbs thyme, 4Tbs your favorite vinegar and cover with 2 cups boiling broth (or stock, or in a pinch bouillon!) Set the crock pot on high, and let cook for four hours. Stir twice in that time. Whe it's done, remove liquid and convert it to your favotrite brown gravey. Return to the crock pot with the rest of the food and use the ceramic insert as a serving dish. Serve over Mashed Potatoes.
It's very good, and I think you could make it out of lean beef, as well.
